Welcome at the Heinrich Heine University
The Heinrich Heine University (HHU) emerged from the “Düsseldorf Academy of Applied Medicine” in 1965, and has become a nationally and internationally recognized institution. Currently, it has about 30,000 students and 310 professors allocated among the five faculties Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Medicine, Philosophy, Law, and Business Administration and Economics. Being one of the very few campus universities in Germany, all institutes, faculties and the university hospital are not only in “close proximity”, but are located within walking distance.
Hence, collaborations and exchange of knowledge are part of daily life at HHU, especially within structured Ph.D. programs and research networks. Located in the prospering capital of the German Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), HHU is in a unique location that is especially attractive for collaborative research at top national and international levels.
Nationally and internationally renowned research programs, particularly within the life sciences, biomedical research and physics are hallmarks of HHU. Central departments and umbrella institutions of the HHU, such as the International Office, the Interdisciplinary Graduate and Research Academy Düsseldorf and the Medical Research School Düsseldorf offer specific and excellent assistance to international and early-stage researchers.
